Decorating With Bold Velvets

Interior Design Trends, Tips & Tricks

Over the past few years, luxe velvets have become a go-to among decorators—a trend that’s dramatically changed the perception of the material, which was once considered extravagant and stuffy. Offered in an array of bright colors and jewel tones, these updated velvets offer a cozy versatility that works well in traditional, glam, preppy, and bohemian interiors.

Because it layers so beautifully with other textures and patterns (we see you, leopard), velvet presents an opportunity for colorful risk-taking. In her NYC pad, Jenna Lyons, the former Creative Director of J. Crew, opted for a modular sofa in pink velvet.

When paired with an unexpected, complimentary wall color, this bold Aqua Velvet Tuxedo Chair pops. It looks especially fresh when styled with a printed Fawn Ottoman. “I love our aqua velvet,” shares Britt Bunn, Co-Founder and COO of The Inside. “It layers beautifully with other blues for a strong color story and also easily pairs with other colors or neutrals as a singular pop of blue.”

DOUBLE THE FUN

In this New York City apartment, renowned design firm Ashe Leandro drew inspiration from Milan-based Dimore Studio. The seductive lines of the Kagan sofa and vintage chairs (all in velvet, of course) work perfectly with the moody palette.

TIMELESS COMFORT

While velvet often falls into autumn and winter trend reports, we are here to remind you of its timelessness. Case in point: the sunny and cozy townhouse of Alison Cayne, founder of Haven’s Kitchen. Clad in a dusty mustard velvet (it’s the perfect color!), her George Smith sofas set the tone for this chic and inviting space.

MODERN MOSS

“This earthy green has a beautiful, grounded effect against a crisp white back drop and warm wood floors,” says Danielle Walish, The Inside’s Creative Director. One of velvet’s best qualities is its versatility. Here, a modern silhouette (this bench) juxtaposes the space’s traditional architecture.

SOFT AND SOPHISTICATED

When considering where (and how) to decorate with velvet, the bedroom must not be ignored. “Our luxe bordeaux velvet sits perfectly on the Modern Wingback Bed. It offers a hotel-like elegance and layers so well with items you might already own (think kilim rugs and thrifted wooden pieces),” shares Ivy Zhang, The Inside’s Product Manager.

YOUTHFUL ELEGANCE

Velvet is not just for your grandmother’s living room. It’s actually great for the little ones. In addition to its soft hand-feel, it’s really durable and wears well with time. This chic Demilune Bed checks all the right boxes: it’s a twin; it comes in more than 100 playful hues; and it’s kid AND pet friendly. The same silhouette is available as a headboard 🙂

CONTRASTING COLORS

While colorful velvets often serve as a fabric staple in maximalist interiors (hello Miles Redd), it’s important to remember that they can serve as a singular pop of color in pared-down spaces. If you’re a minimalist who craves velvet, select one bold hue (Ocean Velvet is pictured above!) and pair it with a contrasting piece of abstract art. Opt for solids, simple finishes, and modern silhouettes in the rest of the space.

MIXED MATERIALS

Velvets pair especially well with wovens, linens, and embroidered textiles. It’s all about mixing textures—in case you needed a reminder.

LUXE LAYERING

For the boho-chic look, start with navy velvet. Then, go crazy with indigo throw pillows like Rachel Bilson did in her LA abode. Don’t forget to layer in ikat!
